Originally bred as pets for the children of royalty in the 1600's, miniature horses are considered to be affectionate and gentle animals that are inquisitive and eager to please. They have developed from years of selectively breeding horses and ponies of diminutive size. There is much speculation as to the actual breed origins of the miniature horse but it is commonly thought Shetland pony, Dartmoor pony, small Thoroughbreds and Arabians have all been used to create more refined and proportioned horses.
Miniature Horses are found all over the world, they come in various types from the heavier Irish Draft type to the Arabian or Thoroughbred type, in fact, for many large breeds there is a miniature counterpart. They also come in a huge variety of colours and coat patterns. They are a height breed which depending on which register the horse is entered on, is 34" maximum for Category A horses and 38" for Category B horses to either the withers or for American Miniature Horses, the last mane hair.
The modern miniature is kept today mainly for showing or as a pet or companion, they are ideal for those scaling down from large horses or children and less able bodied adults. Although they cannot be ridden by anyone but the smallest of children, miniature horses can be driven for pleasure or for show.
The Miniature Horse Club of Great Britain was established in 2002 and has gone from strength to strength since it's early days with membership growing each year. We are one of the largest Miniature Horse Clubs/Societies in Europe and we are the only club in the UK to be sanctioned by the American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA). We are also a DEFRA approved passport issuing authority for horses with at least 50% American breeding.
Our aim is to promote the showing, breeding and welfare of all types of Miniature horse from British bred to Falabella or American miniature throughout the UK and to show their amazing character and versatility to as many people as possible. We have area reps throughout the UK, each rep organises their own area show and we hold 2 National shows annually.
Classes include: Showing, driving, halter obstacle, jumping (in hand of coarse) and Liberty.
You don't need to own a miniature to become a member!
